Some Love for Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness”

5 Apr

A few weeks ago I discovered this video (above) on YouTube; my main selling point was Kid Cudi’s collaboration with MGMT in this song. Evidently this is the second video Kid Cudi made for this song–the first involving Drake and some slow-motion champagne spilling.  Here’s the link to that:

I have to admit that I do love this second video. Trippy dream sequences never fail to draw me into a music vid; I think it’s creative and artsy for mainstream media.

Also, the second video seems to emphasize the musical genre-mixing involved in the song, which also features Ratatat besides Kid Cudi and MGMT. The video with Drake brings Kid Cudi’s song more to the hip/rap/r&b genre through emphasizing women, fortune, parties, and expensive alcohol, much like most stereotypes of those genres.  I’m not judging the stereotype; but being who I am, I will always choose art over stereotypes.
