Alice in Wonderland

15 Mar

Yesterday I managed to fight the monsoon-like weather to catch a viewing of  Tim Burtons’ Alice in Wonderland in 3D. I have to say, once again, hype has ruined my perception of this film–I realize it is a well-made film, but my opinon of it has been destroyed by persistant advertising and merchandising. All in all, Burton managed to construct a film that will hold the attention of the entire family.

Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen

One aspect of the film that I am still slightly confused about is Burton’s choice to better characterize the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) in comparison to the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). Also, the Red Queen’s costuming is much more elaborate and almost likeable. The White Queen dons all white–go figure–but wears black lipstick and nail polish. Quite honestly, the broad looks scary. I’d almost prefer torture in the Red Queen’s royal court over constantly looking at the terror of the White Queen’s constuming. Even Hathaway’s performance portrays a dazed and confused lady who seems hardly fit to rule…well anything really. Additionally, the Red Queen spends more time on-screen than the White Queen does. I’m wondering, however, if this choice in emphasizing the Red Queen over the White Queen serves some kind of greater purpose that I am not yet aware of.  I sure hope so. Overall, I have to say that Helena Bonham Carter is AMAZING at screaming “OFF WITH (insert gender specific pronoun) HEAD!”, and I rather enjoyed her performance.
