Dancing at the Oscars

8 Mar

An amazing thing happened last night–I witnessed a form of entertainment media that used dance in the context of pop culture. You may ask what I mean by this…Well the Oscars of course!

A vastly talented group of men and women joined together and danced to Oscar film soundtrack nominations. I really wish I were capable of identifying which genre(s) the choreography best resembled. Most of the male dancers performed some kind of hip hop derivative. Strange description, I know. But what I mean is that these men used the fluid motions of hip hop in combination with break dancing to songs ranging from “Up” to “Avatar.”

I have to say the choreography of the female dancers, for the most part, was disappointing. The typical piroutte-leap combinations plagued the female dancers, while the male dancers truly depicted experimental moves.

Most notable of the male dancers was one man who evoked robotic, mechanical motions to the main theme song from “Up.” I have to admit that I was astounded–I really have never seen anything quite like this before.

Here I found a video of the Oscars dance auditions. You’ll be able to see exactly what I’m talking about with the male dancers.  However, some really talented female dancers are featured in the video, the moves of which I did not see at the show. Seeing so many talented dancers in this video, I’m beginning to wonder exactly how dancers were selected from these auditions.

Ok. So I’m having some technical difficulties with posting the video. Hopefully it will be up soon!
